Description:

When trying to start up the OS on the Raspberry Pi without a mouse (or I’m assuming any peripherals as well) plugged in, the boot up screen will simple show “Error: Could not”. To fix, just plug in a mouse. This should fix the issue, and it should boot up immediately.

Summary: The USB adapter for Wi-FI does not work
Description:

Hi,

If I understand it, the internal WI-Fi does not work in the RPi4b due to the fact that there is no compatible driver for Windows 10 with ARM64.

I thought I would solve this problem with via USB Wi-Fi adapter. Which always works for me on all WIndows 10 (x64).

AWUS036ACM https://www.alfa.com.tw/products/awus036acm = Chipset MT7612U
AWUS036ACHM https://www.alfa.com.tw/products/awus036achm = Chipset MT7610U

Unfortunately, my (Windows 10 ARM64) does not recognize any of these USB Wi-Fi adapters, I only see it in the device list as unknown "USB\VID_0E8D&PID_7612&REV_0100"

Is there any way to get these adapters to work?
Thanks.

It's caused by the RAM disk. What software are you using for it? I can't reproduce this issue with ImDisk or SoftPerfect RAM Disk.

I'm not able to reproduce this issue. Have you tried again? Rebooting the machine might also help.

Yes, tried after restart! Same result. The previous version of Windows 21370 or the previous version of WoR will make any difference?

Ok, it worked! Had to whitelist the app from protection as in the screenshot. Also, is this forum the right place to ask questions/queries?

I turned off the virus protection and tried again. The process went further but still failed. I made a deliberate effort to not do anything (type on keyboard, move mouse) while the WoR process was building the disk and the errors still occurred. I have attached the error logs.

I just realized I was using a USB to Sata adapter that had given me a problem last year on a Pi4. So, I have ordered another adapter that is the same as the one currently on the Pi4 and does not have any problems.

Please put a hold on this report until I have had time to received and test the new adapter. It will be here on Friday and I should have a report on Saturday, 29 May.

Thank you.

Butch

The problem is resolved. I used a different USB to Sata Adapter which has the ASM1153E chip and was able to successfully build the drive.

Do not believe anyone who says all USB to Sata Adapters are equal. The ones with the ASM115E chip always word, other chips work sometimes but not all the time.

Summary: Diskpart may refuse to convert the disk to GPT
Description:

Someone has posted this snippet from the log file:

Disk 6 is now the selected disk.

The disk you specified is not MBR formatted.
Please select an empty MBR disk to convert.

2021-04-27 16:25:45.3646 [warn] Exit code: -2147024809

2021-04-27 16:25:45.3866 [error] Aborting...

The disk should be converted to MBR by the clean command, but it seems that's not always the case.
Fortunately, we can call the convert mbr command as many times as we want without diskpart complaining that "the specified disk is not GPT formatted" like it does when converting to GPT.

The reason I'm trying to limit memory is because in GPT mode with 8GB usable Windows crashes constantly. If I flash in MBR mode, no crashes but Windows doesn't see more than 4GB. I'd like to find a sweet spot where I can use GPT with more than 4GB without crashing.

Per Mario's recommendation, I've tried bcdedit "removememory" command but it doesn't work either. I'm stuck at Pi 3GB, 4GB in MBR mode with limit disable or the full 8GB usable in GPT mode with constant GSODs.

You have problem X, but you're trying to solve problem Y. You shouldn't need to limit the RAM in the first place.

GPT support on USB drives isn't working properly at the moment (https://www.worproject.ml/bugtracker/view.php?id=137), so MBR is your only option.

If I flash in MBR mode, no crashes but Windows doesn't see more than 4GB.

Try a clean re-install with MBR (don't edit the config.txt file), then disable the 3 GB limit in UEFI and let it boot. Does it still see only 4 GB of RAM?

Good morning Mario and thanks for your prompt reply.
I didn't know there were issues with GPT/USB. In fact, at WoR discord I was advised to use GPT so the OS can be updated via WU.

I've tried countless times to flash with MBR without editing config.txt to no avail, the result is always the same, 8GB available but only 3.95GB usable.
I think I'm gonna buy a fast SDCard and put USB to rest until the issues are fixed.

Thanks again, you and the team are doing a great job, please keep up. Cheers!

That is weird. The partition scheme shouldn't affect the amount of available RAM.
It may be worth trying a non-insider build (like 19042).

I may release a new version of the imager that fixes the GPT issue this week.

Weird indeed.
Believe I've tried, most of the "countless" failed attempts were 1904x. They all work fine but not with the GPT/USB/8GB combination.
Great! thanks for letting me know, looking forward to test it.
Cheers!

Hi Mario,
Yes thanks! everything is working in GPT mode w/o crashes so far. Total_mem from advance menu @4096MB is working.
Where do I increase it to test the upper limit w/o crashing?
I can try MBR if needed for feedback purposes otherwise I'm happy as it is. LMK. Cheers!

So it still crashes with GPT and no memory limit? What's the stop code in the BSoD/GSoD?

(0000251)
RgA59

No crashes. I flashed 19042.928 and successfully updated all the way up to 19043.962 without a single crash so far but I'd like to increase usable memory gradually to find out at which point the crashes would start again if any. Before I couldn't do that because I was limited to either 3GB (Pi limit) or 8GB (limit disable). I can't provide you with logs because I didn't keep copies of all those failed installations.
Is it possible to now increase the usable memory to a value higher that 4096MB without re-flashing?

(0000252)
RgA59
2021-04-27 05:07

Never mind, I found out that it can be done by using msconfig.
I can't believe is so simple, I never had the need to this before so I didn't know.

So far so good, no crashes even at full 8GB usable. I'm not sure what was causing all those GSODs before, I haven't changed anything else so it must've been the issue USB/GPT that you mentioned at the beginning.

Now that it is stable, Is time to start overclocking to see how far it will go. Thanks for everything. Cheers!

I've built an image using UUPDump (Linux). Now I'm using WoR imager. When I drag the image to the imager (or select it through the file select modal), it shows "Mounting ISO Image..." for a couple of seconds then emits an obscure error:

The image is 3.84GB and mounts just fine in macOS.

I tried mounting the file on the Windows VM, however, and it was unable to mount the image because it was on the VM host. After copying the image file to the VM guest, the imager was able to use it.

Consider trapping this exception to replace it with a nicer error message.

Also, consider allowing the image to be mounted by the user. If I were able to mount the ISO into the Guest VM, that would have saved copying 3.8GB to the guest VM.

WoR relies on Windows to mount the image, so if you're not able to mount it manually then I can't do anything.

Also, consider allowing the image to be mounted by the user. If I were able to mount the ISO into the Guest VM, that would have saved copying 3.8GB to the guest VM.

If the ISO is already mounted, you can load the install.wim/.esd file from the sources folder.

Consider trapping this exception to replace it with a nicer error message.

I agree. This will be fixed in the next version.

Summary: Add USB 3.0 boot support workarounds
Description:

USB 3.0 boot from an UASP drive fails with the INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE BSoD.
This issue is caused by the rpiuxflt.sys filter driver, and until we find a proper fix for it, we can apply one the following workarounds:

  • replace uaspstor.sys with USBSTOR.SYS in the Windows\System32\drivers directory. (this allows the usage of all the available RAM, but transfer speeds are limited due to removed UASP support and filter driver overhead)

  • prevent the installation of the rpiuxflt.sys driver and create the following reg key: HKLM,System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Compatibility\Device\USBXHCI:ACPI!VEN_PNP&DEV_0D10,\ USBXHCI,0xB0001,0x70000000003 (this requires a 3 GB RAM limit, but transfer speeds greatly increase)

Partially fixed.
The app is now system DPI aware, meaning that it will scale correctly to the DPI of the primary monitor.
Moving the window to a monitor with a different DPI setting will still cause some blurriness.

Description:

USB doesn't work here.
As far as I know we need a separate partition for this image to be useful, and we don't currently create one (because of space constraints on devices with 16 GB or less available space).

It might be re-enabled in the future, with proper support. But for now, it's useless and locks the system after a few failed boot attempts.

There's no easy way to verify if all these packages will work on the selected device, so we should add a warning for that.

Summary: Disable GPT support
Description:

The GPT hack that we're using seems to have no effect on the Pi 4, because the boot ROM now loads the bootcode from the built-in SPI EEPROM instead of looking for it on removable media.

So I think it should be disabled until native support for GPT is added in the bootcode (will that ever happen?), or maybe we can find another way of tricking the boot ROM into finding the ESP partition?

Summary: Add support for Windows 10 ARM32 build 15035
Description:

This even works on the Raspberry Pi 2 rev 1.1.
On the Pi 3 B all BSP drivers work, including the proprietary ones: touch panel (for the official RPi touch display??), WLAN and Bluetooth.

There's no x86 emulation layer unfortunately, and some things are broken.

Note: this won't work on the new Pi 4 without modifying the ms-iot UEFI.

Summary: Problem displaying accents
Description:

Hello !
I work on the French translation for WoR. My problem is that the French language is complex and requires accents for a good understanding. Is it possible to modify the program to support accents (à, è, é,ù,ê) ? Any ideas ? :-)
Thank you for your help and happy to contribute to building WoR.

MCCI Corp (a company hired by Microsoft to create the USB Drivers for Windows 10 IoT Core on the Pi) has released a special, non-commercial use version of their TrueTask USB Host stack. This fixes almost every USB problem in Windows 10 right now, including:

  • Booting without unplugging USB devices
  • Ethernet port on Pi now functional
  • Flash drives now fully functional
  • USB driver does not randomly crash
  • USB driver now supports all standard keyboards/mice
  • WiFi adapters over USB now work

It is of high importance to add these new drivers into the project.

The wimlib-imagex version you provided only runs on 64bit windows, it makes your program crash on a 32bit system when it's trying to apply the image. Manually replacing the executable with the 32bit version seems to work fine. I think you should provide it too in your package and run it in case your program is running on a 32bit Windows installation.

Product Build: Resolution: fixed
Projection: none
ETA: none Fixed in Version: 0.2.3

Summary: Windows images containing install.esd are rejected
Description:

Windows Setup permits the main install image inside the ISO to be named "install.esd" instead of the usual "install.wim". This is typically used for solid-compressed install images.

Both dism and wimlib handle such images just fine, but checks in the code need to be adjusted to accept the "esd" extension.

Loading install.esd directly causes a .NET exception popup, while an ISO containing install.esd gives a red "An error occurred" banner.

Tags:
Steps To Reproduce:

Using uup-converter-wimlib, generate a "highly compressed" ISO, or just take an existing ISO and rename install.wim to install.esd (the file format is the same, it's just convention to use "esd" as the extension when solid compression is used).

Try to load the whole ISO in the WoR installer -> red banner,
Manually mount the ISO, and try to load install.esd -> it doesn't appear in the list, manually entering install.esd in the Open field causes a .NET error.

File name handling is all that needs to change. I tested renaming a highly compressed install.esd to install.wim, and it works just fine; we just need to treat "esd" as a synonym of "wim".

Summary: The temporary directory is not entirely deleted on exit
Description:

If the user selects an ISO image, the temporary folder is not entirely deleted on exit (the "wim" folder still exists).
Also, the application does not attempt to re-create the missing folders if the "temp" folder already exists.
That's why the drivers package can't be extracted to the temporary folder.
